They learned sign language, talked about their schools, exchanged life stories, and spoke honestly about their hopes and dreams for the future. Learners engaged with one another attentively, with authenticity, respect, and understanding.
What emerged was not just awareness, but genuine connection. This is the kind of engagement that builds empathy, breaks down barriers, and reminds us that inclusion is not a concept; it is something we all have a responsibility to actively create.
“Visiting the Dominican School for Deaf Children JumpStart Club and hearing about their plans for a food garden and tuck shop was an incredibly inspiring experience. It was a powerful reminder that young people in South Africa are eager to be active changemakers, committed to uplifting their communities and driving meaningful change in our country. I left feeling humbled, deeply inspired, and motivated to share the JumpStart programme with my own school.” — Wesley Deintjes, Head of Grade 10, St Cyprian’s School
Moments like these remind us why collaboration across differences matters, not just in schools, but in our daily lives as humans. When young people are allowed to see and learn about each other’s worlds, something shifts. Barriers come down. Understanding, compassion, and empathy grow.
This is what JumpStart is about.
We’d love to hear from educators, leaders, and organisations who believe in the power of connection and collaboration. Let’s build more of these moments together.
