Meet Theresa Nthabiseng โ€“ JumpStart Guardian and Deputy Principal at Makhanda Secondary school in Kwazulu-Natal (KZN).

This is her story:

“My journey with JumpStart and the JumpStart Club began in 2025, and it has been truly rewarding. The club has enabled our school to turn financial needs into opportunities, equipping learners with practical strategies, support, and the confidence to drive meaningful change through student-led projects.

Through their involvement, learners have developed valuable skills in project planning, fundraising, as well as digital and financial literacy, all through hands-on, experiential learning.

As a new programme, JumpStart has been a valuable learning journey,ย one that has anchored, nurtured and shaped our learners into confident, self-reliant, proactive, and accountable young leaders. Learners have grown into disciplined team players who can communicate effectively and contribute meaningfully to problem-solving.

Through the JumpStart Club, learners took ownership by organising fundraising activities and events, using the funds raised to replace broken classroom windows. Not only did they restore their learning environment, but they also took pride in contributing meaningfully to their school, creating a space where all learners can benefit.

For me it has been deeply rewarding to see a positive change in our learners, especially in behaviour. I have no doubt that future leaders are being moulded through the JumpStart programme.ย ย I have learnt, and continue to learn from our learners.”
